Having arranged to meet a long-standing friend for tea in Worthing, I looked on line for afternoon teas .The Denton lounge looked as if it may fit the bill - oh boy, was I wrong!! Having said 'cream teas' were served from 3 o'clock, we arrived about 3.25p.m.
After managing to negotiate around a large group of noisy skate-boarders, jumping off the Denton steps, without any regard for potential customers, we arrived at the dining area. Whereupon we found a table, which wasn't difficult by the way, as the place was empty. Not the buzziest of places, but hey, we thought we would give it a go. Walking up to the bar to order, I noticed a lady on the phone. Noticing me, instead of the cursory 'will be with you in a minute madam' she turned her back on me and dissappeared out of sight.
I awaited for a few minutes but could not find anyone who was serving. The only people visible were workmen in overalls, covered in paint, walking in and out of the kitchen area, and through the lounge.
A 'welcoming' experience is was not, so we turned on our heels and left!
Such a shame really, as having lived in the town most of my life, I have visited the Denton often and it has been pleasant, with its olde worlde charm capturing the very essence of Worthing. Hopefully this was a one-off and I will attempt to give it another go at some point, but meanwhile I offer this tip, being the start of your summer season, if you do nothing else - please get rid of those wretched
